Robot music rules! 2008-11-04 17:46:15
Last weekend, there was an event at the Groove Junction, Galaxy Ampang. Colourama 08: A Celebration of Low Fi Graphics and Music turned out to be one of the most exciting events to hit KL this year. For the first time in Malaysia, chiptune music is performed live in front of a crowd. The music was accompanied by lo-fi visuals that blew the audience away. Artists from Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore filled the room with their blend of chiptunes all evening. JW86 (Indonesia), Moronbeat & Huahuahua (Malaysia), The Night Act (Malaysia), Robo Analogue (Indonesia), MikrochipNo32 (Malaysia), Jazmok (Malaysia) and Ikuma (Singapore), among others, showcased their blend of robotic music to a mesmerized audience.
But first, just what are "chiptunes" anyway? According to the organizer Ely Yanniz, "Chiptune ni muzik yang menggunakan Gameboy, Atari, dan sebagainya untuk buat satu muzik yang menggunakan beberapa software and combined with instrument lain mengikut kreativiti diorang."
Yup, music out of your favourite video games!
Seventeen regional acts performed that evening. The feedback has been positive. Ely adds: "This event bagi kami kepuasan yang agak maksimum. Friends, performers and media from Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore juga bagi feedback positif, plus semua orang nak Colourama'09! So, seriously kitorang rasa puas bila semua orang happy and bagi feedback yang positif. So insya-Allah, jumpa di Colourama 09! Probably akan combine dengan lebih ramai performers from around the world. Or around Asia."
That sounds like fun, isn't it?
