Don’t get caught in the mosh! 2008-11-03 22:13:04
Have you ever been to a gig and you see people dancing in a circle, aggressively pushing and slamming each other in a fun, friendly manner? Well, it is called moshing, and it is (supposed to be) fun!
The history of moshing goes back to the American hardcore band Bad Brains. Due to the band’s Jamaican-influenced pronunciation of the word “mash,” their audience took it as “mosh.” The band Anthrax later popularized it into the mainstream with a song called “Caught in a Mosh.”
Although it looks fun, moshing could also be dangerous. The aggressive pushing and slamming in a crowded space could also invite trouble. Injuries and accidents are often inevitable. Due to this, there are bands that actually prohibit moshing at their shows. In the 1980s, Fugazi became well known for their opposition to violent dancing at shows. Mainstream bands such as Smashing Pumpkins also took a stance against moshing, after one of their fans was crushed to death during a show in 1996.
I've moshed quite a bit in the local circle. Thankfully our audience are well mannered and wise enough to draw the line between clean, healthy fun (and exercise!) and dangerous recklessness. It is generally agreed that moshers try not to harm each other. There’s the “moshing etiquette” which promotes safety through behaviours such as immediately help fallen audiences back to their feet. The local moshpits are safe! So let’s have some fun!
But oh, leave your glasses with your friends should you decide to jump into the moshpit. You don't need to visit your optician after each time you moshed.
I learned that valuable lesson in '97. Tee hee.
